We could have brought a backpacking tent along. Instead, being young guys we relished in challenging ourselves and flirting with danger. We cavalierly enjoyed our mountaintop landscape even as the sun threatened to dip, and by the time we had turned home we could scarcely go another thousand yards before we noticed that we could not see very well.

Real hikers would have just quickly pitched or otherwise put together a backpacking tent but of course we didn’t have one since we are novices and in no way imagined we’d need to have one. This was supposed to have been a casual day-hike, after all. And yet, here we were at the end of the day and barely began on our descent. What we did not count on was how incredibly fast darkness could grow in a forest.

Although light was still in the sky, it wasn’t reaching us because of the thick canopy of leaves. Even throughout high noon the ground would be mostly shaded, never mind now, right before nightfall. And in one of the most incredible experiences ever, I saw my own hand disappear right in front of me, literally in seconds, melting away into the enveloping darkness like some movie fade-out.

Except that it was happening all to me; We were still nearly two thousand feet up from the trail head; and also we did not even have a backpacking tent!

Fortunately, friends below summoned local volunteer park rangers and we were finally rescued. But not before spending six or seven hours shivering in the cold and dark! Though it had been a humid summer day, it felt more like late fall in rural New York at night. When I started to finally shiver and shiver I thought it was going to be the end of me! So never, never, never – ever – go hiking without a tent or sleeping bag.

The all-important first date. The getting-to-know-you can be greatly helped along by an amusement ride, and the most exciting one of all must be the Skywalk by Zalman Silber. A serial entrepreneur who made his first big fortune with New York’s infamous Skyride, a much ballyhooed but modest thirty-minute movie of helicopter flyovers, Sydney, Australia’s Skywalk is a much more visceral affair – and for a first-date, visceral is where it’s got to be at!

No, get your mind out of the gutter – “visceral” here simply means heart-pounding thrills which, studies show, make dates more attracted to one another. Yep, that’s right: the more physically exciting the activities the more likely dates are to view one another as being physically attractive. Scientists have paired up total strangers of the opposite sex and asked them to secretly judge one another’s attractiveness. Then each pair was put through a roller-coaster, sitting side-by-side, and asked again to rate one another’s attractiveness after the ride. The second set of responses were almost always substantially higher than than the first set!

So if you intend to make a great impression, make sure to get her (or him!) engaged in some kind of physically exhilarating activity with you – such as the aforementioned Skywalk from Zalman Silber. Found at the top of the Sydney Tower, the Skywalk is really a catwalk with glass flooring that provides visitors with a panoramic view of the city a thousand feet above street level. Being a catwalk, everything is out in the open, with no windows between guests and…nothingness. The Skywalk offers not only a bird’s-eye view of the Harbour City but all the visceral feelings to go with it as well!

And if the simple fact of being up so high doesn’t get your date’s heart throbbing, make sure she looks down! Visiting the Skywalk is a perfect first date because the Skywalk is the perfect ice-breaker. Don’t be surprised if she reflexively grabs your arm! Even though everyone is tethered by cable to sturdy metal support structures, the frequent gusts of wind can be strong enough to make one forget all the safety features built into the experience. Afterward, you and your date can retire to the conventional observation deck of the Sydney Tower to enjoy the romantic view while sharing fond memories of your Skywalk. Or better yet, purchase another set of tickets to really jack up the excitement and send her emotions through the roof!

Bronze sculpture is the most common form of cast metal sculptures due to a characteristic trait which is as unusual as it is desirable. Commonly used bronze alloys will expand a little just before being set so that even the finest details of a mold are filled.

Bronze sculptures are also strong while ductile, or lacking in brittleness, allowing figures to be depicted in actions such as leaps and flights. Supports for bronze statues require smaller cross-sections due to such qualities, as can be seen in equestrian statues where only two hooves are on the base.

Today’s examples are generally created of ninety percent copper and ten percent tin, while in antiquity bronze works were occasionally created with other elements such as phosphorus, manganese, aluminum, or silicon. Interestingly, far more stone and ceramic works have come down to us through the ages than those made of bronze, as the metal was quite precious and frequently melted down to produce new sculptures or weapons and armor in times of war.

Thus, really few big examples in bronze are available from ancient times, and of these most aren’t in great condition. Indeed, most works exhibited in museums, while still full of the evidence of wear and tear, have been painstakingly restored to a quality suitable for display.

Working successfully with bronze generally requires a high level of skill, and a number of distinct casting processes might need to be employed, such as lost-wax casting and also the related modern-day technique of investment casting. Other methods consist of sand casting and centrifugal casting.

After final polishing, corrosive materials may be applied to bronze works in order to form a patina or film produced by oxidation or some other chemical procedure and establish some control over the color and finish. For instance, reactive chemicals may be applied to create a novel marble-like appearance.

Some of the most popular of museum replicas are those famous Italian marble statues everyone knows: David, Augustus Caesar, The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. They are a few of the most prized examples of marble sculpture anywhere, with a fine smoothness and absolute realism.

No wonder everyone wants a copy! They truly lend an air of elegance and even authority – gravitas – to a setting. They’re veritable objets d’art in themselves, though can also stylishly serve as bookends and even paperweights!

No, those aren’t ignominious fates for such masterpieces of Italian marble. After all, there is no shame in being practical in addition to being amazing, and if anything making use of miniature versions of beloved marble statues in novel ways can only further cement their reputations. For what is the purpose of art if not to lift us above the everyday? And what better way to do that than to suffuse the everyday with art, in the manner of a deus ex machina!

Having replicas of museum masterpieces in your home or office can put you in a good mood all day long if you truly enjoy art. You’ll go through your day surrounded by some of the most inspirational works ever created by humankind, landmarks of human achievement and imagination. Who knows, they might even “rub off” on you and inspire creations of your own!

Ultimately, the point in owning such things is how they put us in touch with the cultural history of our species. We are reminded of exactly where we came from and what we can achieve. What they teach us is that the human capacity for creativity is boundless; they put us in a spiritual realm where we can all take pride in the legacy of the ancients. Sounds too good to be true? Get your own and see!

Wine racks are essential accessories for the true collector. While the word “accessories” originally referred to those items which are not essential to a item but which may enhance the enjoyment of that product, in the case of wine racks they’re so helpful in organizing and displaying one’s collection that they are really quite necessary, especially when a collection runs into the multiple scores or even hundreds.

But when speaking of wine racks, one usually thinks of a casual collection, almost amateur in its scope – though the proud owner may be just as devoted as any professional trader or dealer. This kind of display rack is normally wall-mounted in a prominent spot, for example the kitchen (most often) or den.

These racks are practically always very carefully chosen for their designs to complement the room as well as provide safe storage. Most such racks or holders are made out of wood while others are wrought of iron. Wood is such a favorite material because of the role it plays in winemaking; numerous wines are very carefully aged in wooden caskets prior to being bottled. Iron is a close second in popularity because the nature of metal is such that sinuous shapes may be created, a feature significantly harder to accomplish with wood.

While many of these racks provide only enough space for a few bottles, full-sized racks can take up an entire basement. For those who don’t know their wine, it may seem extravagant to devote an entire level of one’s house, but almost all agree that simple holders are a great way to store wine.

But people being people, there are even automated models offered which will pull your bottles for you! The super-fancy varieties can also be very expensive, but are quite popular. But no matter which type is chosen, it’s much more elegant than merely stowing your bottles in a cupboard!

Online CPE courses are a fantastic way for specialists to brush up on the latest developments in their fields from the comfort of their own homes. Very much better than old-fashioned correspondence courses, today’s offerings are interactive and in fact fun, making learning simple for busy professionals with sixty hour workweeks!

It’s small wonder then why “online CPE” is one of the most popular of keyword phrases entered into search engines these days. While ongoing professional accreditation has existed for decades, it’s only with the explosion of the worldwide web that tele learning, as this form of instruction is know, has truly taken off.

And in this economy, online CPE courses are crucial in helping licensed professionals maintain their professional skillsets. New doctors, lawyers, and accountants are churned out each year by the hundreds, and though seniority and experience does count for a lot, much of the routine work – which comprise the overwhelming vast majority of any firm’s business – may be quite skillfully handled by new hires. That’s why continuing education is so crucial: it helps one distinguish oneself from the recently graduated class entering one’s profession every year.

In that respect, however, one important point bears repeating: It is everyone’s own responsibility to ensure that any continuing education course taken really counts with the most important professional bodies in one’s field. While more knowledge almost never hurts, a CPE isn’t a matter of exploring your own interests on your own time!

You’re paying money here, so make sure that any credits earned would be accepted by whatever governing board that oversees your profession. And speaking of paying money, here’s one more great tip: See if there are pilot courses that may possibly be taken for free. That’s right, free! Check specific policies for details, but typically you only need to complete the course and provide some feedback.

With media attention by and large focused on foreclosed homeowners, this article will take a brief look to consider the effects on homebuilders such as Isaac Toussie.

Embittered homeowners who have been foreclosed upon have taken to trashing the premises before getting kicked out, with anecdotal estimates by real estate agents putting the number of such vandalized properties at up to half of all such units. But given all the media coverage of foreclosed homeowners, it’s time to take a look now at how the same crisis is affecting homebuilders like Isaac Toussie. After all, many of the small-time businessmen had to take out loans in order to finance their housing developments. Of course, there are no such developers out on the street, and their cases, unfortunate in themselves, are not anywhere near comparable to that of homeowners who have nowhere to go at all. But it’s important to see how things can turn out for businessmen and women caught up in the same economic catastrophe, and how responses can differ – or not.

For instance, many small homebuilders have had to dip into personal savings just to keep their companies afloat, a familiar situation to many homeowners. Buyers were disappearing with cash deposits of several thousand left on the table, proof that local residential property markets had turned ice-cold. Even more unfortunately, many homebuilders have proceeded since then to file for bankruptcy protection, with vast sums owed not only to their lenders but also their subcontractors and workers. But still worse yet, these small-time builders have often financed their businesses with so-called recourse debt which allows banks to seize homes, cars, and other personal assets in case of default – again, quite a familiar scenario comparable to that faced by many homeowners.

Such predicaments have increased and are now considered widespread across the country. Many a builder has been left with unsold units and land, falling behind on interest payments and facing foreclosures. And in a very bad sign of the extent of the destruction involved, even very large homebuilders are in trouble, with legendary builders such as Levitt & Sons, founders of Levittown, New York on Long Island, famous for epitomizing postwar suburbia, forced into bankruptcy like some small unfortunate start-up.

It’s gotten so bad that once solid partnerships and friendships have frayed as an every-man-for-himself mentality creeps into the proceedings. Contractors and subcontractors have had to take out liens on the property they build in order to protect themselves. And it is in this manner that the experiences of homeowners and homebuilders differ: the latter have almost no hope of any governmental assistance whatsoever, despite being affected by the same subprime mortgage industry shenanigans that’s made owning a home so suddenly burdensome.

Legal Disclaimer: Be advised that such information as has been presented so far only constitutes mere opinion and should under no circumstances be misconstrued for professional advice of any kind whatsoever! Always consult those properly licensed and/or otherwise qualified when it comes to making business decisions of any financial importance.

I had some online CPE courses to do the other day. As a lawyer, it is mandatory that we take continuing professional education. Online CPE courses are great, because I normally get do attend on my own schedule. There are some courses which are available live only, virtually the same as a normal class taken at a college except conducted over the internet, taking advantage of that medium’s exponentially greater reach but little else.

But these are quite the exception, and usually only available this way due to copyright concerns. I usually avoid these kinds of continuing professional education courses unless the lecturer happens to be some hot-shot lawyer or the material is especially interesting to me.

To me, the main advantage of online CPE courses is how it’s possible to go at one’s own pace. And as a third-year associate at one of the largest corporate law firms in the world, believe me when I say how much I appreciate that convenience! I work sixty to seventy-hour weeks, including weekends of course, and that’s not even considering all the years of studying I’ve already gone through: by now I have twenty-some-odd years of schooling – significantly a lot more than two whole thirds of my life!

So anything that lets me take it easy a little is most desired, and being able to pursue continuing professional education over the worldwide web makes a bad situation a little better.

I mean, I really don’t want to do it – but it is a requirement for periodic relicensing as an attorney, and I’m not ready to quit the profession just yet, if ever – so being able to at least take my time with it takes some of the onerousness out of it all. Plus, sometimes it’s free if it’s a pilot course, an experimental course for which I receive free CPE credits in exchange for offering some feedback, making things even less onerous!

Embittered homeowners who have been foreclosed upon have taken to trashing the premises before getting kicked out, with anecdotal estimates by real estate agents putting the number of such vandalized properties at up to fifty percent of all such units. But given all the media coverage of foreclosed homeowners, it’s time to take a look now at how the same crisis is affecting homebuilders like Isaac Toussie. Of course, there are no such developers out on the street, and their cases, unfortunate in themselves, are not anywhere near comparable to that of homeowners who have nowhere to go at all. But it’s fascinating to see how things can turn out for businessmen and women caught up in the same economic tsunami, and how responses can differ – or not.

For example, many small homebuilders have had to dip into personal savings just to keep their companies afloat, a familiar state of affairs to many homeowners.

Such cases have increased and are now considered widespread across the country. Many a builder has been left with unsold units and land, falling behind on interest payments and facing foreclosures. And in a very bad sign of the extent of the destruction involved, even very large homebuilders are in trouble, with legendary builders such as Levitt & Sons, founders of Levittown, New York on Long Island, famous for epitomizing postwar suburbia, forced into bankruptcy like some small ill-fated start-up.

It’s gotten so bad that once solid partnerships and friendships have frayed as an every-man-for-himself mentality creeps into the proceedings. Contractors and subcontractors have had to take out liens on the property they build in order to protect themselves. And it is in this manner that the ordeals of homeowners and homebuilders differ: the latter have almost no hope of any governmental assistance whatsoever, despite being affected by the same subprime mortgage industry shenanigans that’s made owning a home so suddenly burdensome.

The correct wedding favors can be difficult enough to find, seeing how they should reflect not only the occasion but the couple and all their guests, but for those in alternative~ lifestyles for instance open marriages it can be extremely challenging. On the one hand, traditional wedding favors do not seem to honor the most unique aspect of this kind of a marriage – namely, that it’s open and the couple is not exactly shy about the fact – but on the other hand most people wish to remember a marriage, not a social statement.

Of course, one may easily retort that marriage by definition is really a social statement to begin with – but the institution is so frequent and nearly universal that it’s no “statement” at all, not in the sense of a declaration beyond the obvious.

Wedding favors are also statements, in effect, a kind of message from the couple to their guests. They symbolize what the couple wishes the guest to remember of the wedding, and even how the guest should view the couple. So how to go about choosing the right takeway gift, the right momento?

Ultimately, it depends on the couple, of course. The overwhelming vast majority would no doubt prefer innocous ceremonies and by extension sourvenirs – even private affairs that make the official proclamation of their marriage blend into the vast background of all marriages occurring in their culture. Hence the double difficulty encountered by those in alternative family arrangements where nothing seems to recognize, much less celebrate, their beliefs.

What to do, then? Fortunately, many such people, those who pick and also proudly proclaim their unusual unions, are really creative and eminently capable of designing their own distinctive parting gifts for their guests. But as modern society becomes ever more permissive, it’s only a matter of time before enterprising individuals start catering to this niche market with particular items that not only recognize their particular flavor of marriage but even honor it.
